At least 1 billion people worldwide have a visual impairment, out of which more than 43 million people are blind. The most common causes are uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts, which have a higher prevalence in low income countries. Plus, most of these people are over 50 years old. However, it is estimated that approximately 80% of visual impairments are preventable.
